Bernadine “Bernie” Cwan, 94, entered eternal life on Divine Mercy Sunday.
Born on June 23, 1930, in Chicago to Ignatius and Anne (Morlock) Zborak, Bernie lived through nearly a century of change.
Growing up during the Great Depression, coming of age during World War II, and witnessing everything from black-and-white television to smartphones, from the moon landing to the internet age.
She adapted to it all with grace, humor, and a strong sense of perspective.
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, she remained steadfast in faith and spirit, reminding all who knew her that resilience, patience, and hope were timeless virtues.
Bernie was the devoted wife for almost 60 years of the late Stanley Cwan, and together they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and community.
She was the loving mother of James Cwan and beloved and dear mother to Marianne (Mark) Evans.
To her grandsons, she was their treasured “Baga", Zachary (Rachel) Evans and Noah Evans (fiancée Hannah Wilder).
Forever proud of the men they became and the love they share.
While “Baga” was the special name given to her by her grandsons, it quickly became a title of affection used by many who loved her.
She wore it proudly, knowing it spoke to the warmth, care, and joy she brought to everyone around her.
To many in Schiller Park and beyond, she was lovingly known as Mrs. Cwan, the heart and soul of St. Maria Goretti Parish, where she faithfully served as parish secretary for 45 years.
Her gentle voice, kind heart, and endless patience touched generations of parishioners.
She was a guiding force in the Women’s Club, a trusted First Communion teacher, Marian Medal mentor, choir member, and a joyful presence at every bake sale and parish event.
She was a spiritual friend and confidante to many, always ready with a listening ear, warm hug, or quiet prayer.
Later in life, her move to Huntley, IL brought joy to her family and delight to many who followed her sweet adventures on social media as “Little Missy.”
Her fans were charmed by her stories, style, and her affection for Culver’s (especially her cheeseburger and scoop of chocolate custard).
Bernie was known for her timeless and graceful style.
She was rarely seen without perfectly coiffed hair, a coordinated cardigan, a stylish blouse, a piece of beautiful jewelry, and a warm smile to complete the look.
Her classic fashion sense earned her the title of “Best Dressed” at Heritage Woods of Huntley, where she proudly lived for the past eight years.
Fondly called “The Queen” by staff and friends alike, Bernie’s elegance was just another reflection of the beauty she carried within.
Bernie’s life was a living testimony to kindness, humility, and faith.
She had a unique ability to make every person feel seen, heard, and loved.
Her patience, love, and understanding were unwavering.
She was an example to all.
She was a proud and loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, and a deeply respected woman and friend in every neighborhood and community she graced.
Preceded in death by her parents and sisters Dolores 'Dee" Jozsa, Mildred Zborak, Vickie Zborak.
