Doris Guill

d. June 17, 2021

Doris Dean Guill was a sweet, funny and talented lady. Her family and friends will miss her gentle, loving ways as well as her dry, twinkling and sometimes wicked wit.

She made the best bread pudding, bean soup, fried chicken, kidney bean salad, angel food cake, lemon bars, et cetera, et cetera. In fact, everything she made was stellar, from a simple lunch to a big elaborate dinner. Pecan fudge and buttered popcorn were a couple of her own go-to snacks, along with black coffee and a nice piece of apricot Danish. Guacamole and chips likewise met with her approval, especially if flanked by an ice cold margarita or two.

Besides being a great cook, she loved music of all kinds, from gospel to opera to folk to Johnny Cash or the Moody Blues. She herself was a fine musician who played the piano and directed the choir at River Grove Bible Church for decades.

There were things you could always give her for Christmas or her birthday and know they'd raise a smile: stylish shoes (size 8), silky blouses with rows of complicated buttons, delicate earrings that sparkled but weren't too gaudy, and novels of all sorts  -- she was an enthusiastic, open-minded reader who equally enjoyed books about history, Christianity, Regency romance, and even absurd comedy. She also loved old movies and could laugh or cry at them with equal verve. Doris was a Chicago Cubs fan, for better or worse.

Above all things, she adored her family. She had 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandkids, all naturally spectacular. The love of her life, her husband of 60+ years, Harold Charles Guill, traveled before her to Heaven and has surely been waiting impatiently to welcome her with open arms, an ecstatic smile, kisses, and a promise of endless joy and peace.

A graveside service will be held at Elm Lawn Cemetery at 12:00pm on Thursday, June 24, 2021.
Grave location is Section 18, Lot 173, Grave 5.
