John Hauter

April 9, 1940 — January 5, 2021

Born to Life on April 9, 1940. Born to Eternal Life on January 5, 2021.

United in Marriage to: Janet Wojcik Hauter. Father of the late John A. Hauter, Jr., Bradley D. Hauter, Stephen M. Hauter, and Hope F. L. Hauter.

Grandfather of Anna S. Hauter, Christian T. Hauter, Trevor J. Hauter, Taylor E. Hauter, Cooper T. Hauter, Zander A. Hauter, and Veronica E. Hauter

Brother of the late Robert L. Hauter, the late Betty M. Hauter, and Dorothy M. Pietrzak,

Son of the late Andrew and Lena Hauter.

John Hauter lived the values of his Alma Mater, the University of Notre Dame. Guided by his faith, he lived a life of service - always a “man on a mission”.  He was a gentle man demonstrated by his demeanor, selfless actions, and the needs of others. As the Partner of International Tax at Arthur Andersen he was considered a “fast tracker” and found the company and his responsibilities fully and completely fulfilling. He loved the creative challenge of resolving the problems of others. He was as loyal to AA& Co. as he was to Notre Dame.

Parenthood:  He loved being a “Dad” and was generous beyond. With a demanding position, he wasn’t home a lot but made up for it when he was; he was all parent. He wanted the best for his sons’ education, the best experiences to expand their horizons preparing them to become citizens of a complex world. He delighted in their choices and the consequences that followed.  He cheered them on in all they did.

His heart overflowed when it came to children. When Janet called from Belize asking him if he would like to adopt a little Belizean girl, his initial response was logical saying, “Are you crazy?  I’m 60 and you’re 58!’ He rambled about another college tuition and a wedding to pay for while Janet listened. After a moment of silence, he whispered “I always wanted to have a little girl too!”, so they asked God for a sign to move forward or not.  It was all over when the child’s birth certificate came over the fax. Her given name was Hope Faith Lamb and her mother’s name was Grace. They knew then that the Holy Spirit was behind it all.

Relationships: John loved people - all people. He preferred long-term faith relationship groups best because of their common values because he grew to know the whole person. Marriage Encounter, Cursillio, Small Christian Communities, and most recently the Beloved Retreat, all appear on his spiritual vita. The one he cherished most was Janet. John took the sacrament of marriage seriously when on their wedding day they were told that there were three in their marriage and never to take that lightly. He often referred to that in the 59 years they had together.  He said “I love you” to her often; she responded even if they were in an argument at the time. They were committed to church reform together believing that the institutional church needed to be more about love than the confinement that rules and law demanded.

Promoted again, John, this time it’s heaven!  Pray for us.

In lieu of flowers, John and Janet worked tirelessly for the non-profit (501c3), American Catholic Council, which supports Catholics living their faith intentionally.  (ThePeoplesSynod.org)
